Apple Picking

Last weekend signaled the end of summer and the official start of Autumn.  And this means that start of all the wonderful Autumn fruit.  So my Mum and I decided to take Madeline and my nephew Archie Apple picking at Windmill Orchards in Coatesville - one of the last pick your own orchards left in Auckland

Available for picking that day were Oratia and Royal Gala Apples and Peckham Pears.  And the trees were absolutely laden!

Windmill Orchards have a great list on their website advising which fruit is ready to pick when.

The kids had an absolute ball running through the Orchard...

Helping pick the fruit...

And sampling the produce...

Delicious!  You just can't beat the taste of something straight off the tree.

It's such a shame that pick your own orchards are almost a thing of the past.  I can remember going Apple picking with Mum at the old Airborne and Clemos Orchards when I was little.  It was such a lovely way to spend the morning back then and still is now with my own daughter.

Check out the Windmill Orchards website and pop in if you are passing to support one of the last pick your own Orchards in Auckland.  You'll love it!
