First Birthday Afternoon Tea

Our darling, delightful, little Maisie Boo turned 1 on Sunday.  That's her all dressed to have photos with Santa.

This kid is seriously the happiest little girl around.  She smiles with every single part of her face.  She wakes up smiling and goes to bed giggling.  When we check on her and tuck her in before we go to bed at night she starts laughing in her sleep.  She's a great feeder, a great sleeper and she hardly ever cries.  But man is she is LOUD!  She loves her big sister (although she knows exactly what noises to make to get her in trouble!) and she adores our cat.  She has a great sense of humour, is a fantastic little mimic and gives the best snugly cuddles.  She is really social and is happy to go to anyone.  She is such a pleasure to have in our family.

I don't mean to gloat - but we had a seriously hard time with our first daughter.  She literally did not stop screaming for the first 7 months and she NEVER slept during the day.  So we didn't know what hit us when Maisie came along.  We kept waiting for the screaming and the refusal to sleep but it never came.  I think I held my breath for the first 6 weeks waiting for it all to go wrong.  I can even remember worriedly calling my Mum because when I put Maisie down to sleep during the day she would just lie quietly in her bassinet looking around before eventually nodding off.  I thought there was something wrong because she wasn't screaming.

Needless to say, she has slotted in to our family absolutely beautifully and we all adore her.  The last year has flown by so quickly.  It seems quite surreal.

Anyhoo, so on Sunday we decided to have a very last minute afternoon tea just for family to mark her actual birthday.  It was literally just tea and cake.  We are planning a proper birthday party at the beginning of February once all of our friends are back from their holidays. ***See Footnote***

It was all really last minute so everything was pulled from around our house with the exception of the flowers which I grabbed from the fruit and veggie store.  The tablecloth was fabric I had left over from another project.

I re-framed this free printable birthday subway art from Eighteen25 which I used for Madeline's last birthday photos.

I made a Pink Velvet Layer Cake to serve which is always delicious.  It was pretty humid that day which was not ideal for the mascarpone icing.  It resulted in my worst crumb job ever!  But it was still delicious :)  I added a cake bunting before serving which I already had from another party.

I used Lindt Haitian Vanilla White Chocolate on top which is delicious!  I used a vegetable peeler to get those long curly strands.

I was a tiny bit worried there wouldn't be enough cake for all everyone so I whipped up two dozen vanilla Cake Pops for the kids.

The Cake Pops were really last minute and I had nothing to dip them in.  I quickly popped down to Chocolate Heaven where the lovely lovely owner talked me through chocolate compounds and how to use them instead of candy melts.  It worked pretty well, despite the humidity, and once I got in to a rhythm of coating them I was away.  The kids loved them.  I think kids like anything on a stick really.  I think they look so cute on the stripey straws which I bought ages ago from Look Sharp.

One of my New Years goals is to stop saving things for "best" so I made sure I laid some of my vintage china tea cups along the back of the table for our guests to take their tea.

I also added some bowls of summer berries for people to sprinkle over their Pink Velvet Layer Cake and some framed photos of the girls which were in their bedrooms.

That was pretty much it.  Literally thrown together an hour before everyone arrived from things we had around the house.

Maisie had a ball opening her presents...

And watching everyone sing happy birthday to her (she especially loved this part!)...

And her Mumma and big sister helping her blow out her candle.

I look back on these photos of our girls - I really can't believe at how much they have both grown in the blink of an eye.  My loves!  Happiest of 1st birthdays to our little Maisie Boo xxx

Footnote: We are super lucky to have a big swimming pool.  We use is all. the. time.  We love it.  During Maisie's birthday the side of it split open.  Argh!  Check out that 12 foot split and the puckered, water logged liner!  (The black box and cables are a pump trying to drain the water).  Such a disaster and so heart breaking!  A real first world problem I know but it's still a major!  The whole pool needs to be replaced which will mean major site works to our property.  Argh!  Which will mean no birthday party in February!  Argh!  I'm so glad that we managed to give her this little tea and cake afternoon tea on her actual birthday.  Thank goodness she really has no idea what's going on.  I'll really have to make up for it on her 2nd birthday.
