SodaStream Healthy Creations

I have fond memories of growing up with SodaStream.  I can still remember my Mum standing at the kitchen bench feeding small glass bottles into an old off-white and orange SodaStream machine, pumping the button on top (which made a really loud honking sound), releasing the orange lever to eject the now carbonated bottle and topping it up with syrup.

30+ years on, SodaStream is still going strong and has come a LONG way since then.
While the traditional flavoured syrups are still available and popular, there has been a shift towards a healthier way of thinking including the new SodaStream Free range which are new syrups that are lightly sweetened, low in calories and free from high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, artificial sweeteners, colours and flavours.

When SodaStream challenged me to come up with a healthy creation I thought I'd take it one step further and make my own natural and sugar free syrups.  I took advantage of the abundance of summer fruit around at the moment and came up with Peacherine Mint Fizz and Berry Sparkle.  They are made entirely from fresh fruit, 100% natural maple syrup and water.  Maple syrup is classed as an acceptable natural sweetener by those who follow the Paleo diet (which isn't me!) so I thought it would be a good choice in trying to keep my syrups as natural and healthy as possible.

Ingredients:
2 cups Peacherines, peeled and chopped
3 tablespoons 100% natural maple syrup
3 tablespoons water
Mint

Method:
Add peacherines, maple syrup and water to a medium sized pot and heat on a high heat until boiling.
Reduce to a medium heat and simmer until liquid reduced by around half or less.
While simmering, lightly mash peacherines with a potato masher to release more of the juices.
When reduced, push pulpy liquid through a sieve in to a clean glass or jar.
Set aside until cool.
You should have 1/4 to 1/3 of a cup of syrup.
To serve, fill a glass with a generous scoop of ice, pour desired amount of syrup over ice, add a mint leaf and top with SodaStream carbonated water.  Enjoy :)

Ingredients:
2 cups fresh or frozen berries of your choice - I used Raspberries
3 tablespoons 100% natural maple syrup
3 tablespoons water

Method:
Add berries, maple syrup and water to a medium sized pot and heat on a high heat until boiling.
Reduce to a medium heat and simmer until liquid reduced by around half or less.
While simmering, lightly mash any whole berries with a fork to release more of their juices.
When reduced, push pulpy liquid through a sieve in to a clean glass or jar.
Set aside until cool.
You should have 1/4 to 1/3 of a cup of syrup.
To serve pour desired amount of syrup in to a glass and top with SodaStream carbonated water.  Enjoy :)

  1. I love these recipes, thank you! I didn't know about the new syrups. Our Soda Stream is used solely to make 'fizzy water' for the kids :)
