Beach Essentials 2018

Even though it's now officially autumn and it happens to be a bit chilly and wet outside today, I'm quietly confident that New Zealand is in for another bout of beautiful sunshiney weather before the seasons turns towards winter.  In between all the recent rain and storms, my little family have enjoyed some beautiful beach trips away around the country this summer.  We're a beach family through and through and we look forward to every moment we can spend with the sand between our toes.  Below are a handful of items that we added to our beach arsenal this summer.  Things we've used over and over this summer, that I now wouldn't be without and can hand on heart recommend to make your beach visits so much easier and enjoyable.

Kathmandu Maison Camp Trolley

This would have to be my number one, absolute favourite new addition to our summer adventures - a beach trolley.  You see families using these everywhere in Hawaii for transporting all their stuff (and kids!) to and from the beach and I started to notice them popping up on kiwi beaches this year too.  There are a few different styles of trolley around.  You can get hard solid plastic ones but I opted for a collapsible canvas one so we could put it in the car without taking up too much space wherever we go.  A few different companies are making them - I chose the Kathmandu Maison Camp Trolley mainly because I wanted to go with a hard wearing reputable brand which I knew wasn't going to break after one season.  The Maison Trolley is made of really sturdy thick canvas and holds 100kg of weight so both girls and all of our stuff easily fit in there with room to spare.  It folds down to a compact rectangle to slip easily in to the car.  The only thing I wish it did have was pockets in the internal canvas for phones, money etc to keep them separate and free from sand.  The Kathmandu Maison Camp Trolley retails for $260 but I got ours on sale before Christmas for $140.  There are cheaper brands out there - I know Kmart do one but it's weigh limit is smaller and the canvas is thinner.  It's probably fine but I was happy to spend a little extra for a premium product.  I can safely say this is hands down on of the best things we've bought.  We have taken it everywhere with us and I'm no longer laden down with all the towels, toys, food in bulky beach bags.  Jamie even throws all his surf gear in there.  It all just gets chucked in and we can head off.  Best purchase ever.  Completely love it!

La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Ultra Light Spray SPF50+

I get sent an incredible amount of sunscreens to trial each year.  Some are oily and heavy, a lot sting the kids eyes, some stain our clothes (namely aerosols!) and some flat out just don't work no matter how much or how often you apply them.  Cheap or expensive - the issues run across the board.  I decided to put a new brand to New Zealand, La Roche-Posay, through it's paces this summer and was hugely impressed.  Initially I was sent the brand to try out the My UV Patch technology - a small heart shaped sticker and an app which monitors your UV exposure through out the day.  This was fun technology to play around with but it was the actual sunscreen that I was super impressed with.  A beautiful smelling (although it's fragrance free) light weight formula that's completely non-oily and easy to rub in, in an easy to use pump spray providing the highest UVA and UVB protection for even the most sun sensitive skin.  I used the Ultra Light Spray on the girls bodies and the Ultra Light Fluid on their faces.  The whole family loved it.  There were no oily bodies (a pet hate of mine), no stained clothes, no stinging eyes (yes!) and no sunburns.  In short, not only did it do the job but it worked really really well and completely exceeded my expectations.  I'll be buying this again.  La Roche-Posy Anthelios is available from Life Pharmacy starting from $31.99.

Sunbum Suncreen Face Stick

Another sunscreen I love is vegan brand Sunbum which I discovered a few years ago in Hawaii.  It's widely available in the Hawaiian Islands but hard to find in New Zealand.  I tracked some down at Amazon Surf and Skate who appear to be one of the only stockists in New Zealand and added the Sunscreen Face Stick to my Sunbum collection this summer.  Compact and super easy to apply but I've actually been carrying it my bag as my daily lip balm.  It's so nourishing for the lip biter that I am.  Love it!  Sun Bum is available from Amazon Surf and Skate starting from $7.99

Country Road Kids Beach Towels

I've made no secret of my love of Turkish towels over the years.  Compact, quick drying, and so versatile - what's not to love?  But sometimes it's nice to use a plush beach towel ya know!  This Christmas was all about practical gifts (and it was seriously the best thing we have ever done but more on that soon) so among all of the other practical gifts, we gave each of our girls two Country Road Beach Towels.  I bought them on one of Country Roads regular "Spend & Save" promos and believe me, they are SO worth it.  So thick, so plush, they wash up beautifully and are such beautiful colours - they are luxury it itself.  Available in store and online from Country Road.  RRP$54.90.

Sophie Store So Shady Hat

This was my "go-to" accessory this summer.  Light weight with excellent sun coverage, dressed up or down, the So Shady Hat literally went with everything.  The Sophie Store So Shady Hats come in three colours and with or without a coloured velvet band.  I also bought the So Cool hat as well but I couldn't seem to part with my So Shady over the summer.  I luuuuurve this hat!  Available from Sophie Store and starting from $38.00.

Kimi & Li Surf Suit

Long sleeve one pieces are definitely in fashion for girls swimwear this year.  I find them really practical as you don't have to worry about rash shirt ride up.  This one right here is functional but super pretty to boot!  I bought this Hawaiian designed Surf Suit for Maddie in Waikiki last year and I get stopped and asked about this every time she wears it.  This particular print is now on sale but has been superseded by two new equally gorgeous designs - Bluebell and Peony.  They ship internationally too!  You can check them out at Kimi & Li.

Sunday Supply Co Animal Kingdom Beach Umbrellas

I'd been admiring this Australian brand on Instagram for ages but shipping to New Zealand was pretty expensive so admire online was all I did until Paper Plane Store in Mt Maunganui started stocking them before Christmas.  I was just a tad excited to get my pre-order in!  Sunday Supply Co Beach Umbrellas are the perfect combination of vintage style, retro prints and neutral colours plus quality manufacturing which I completely love.  I love this retro Animal Kingdom print which spends most of it's time poolside but could happily live with any of their beautiful prints and am eyeing up the another one to be a dedicated beach umbrella too.  Sunday Supply Co Beach Umbrellas are available in New Zealand from Paper Plane Store.  RRP$229.00.  The Sophie Store So Shady Hats are also available from Paper Plane Store if you were after grabbing a few items at once x

So there you have it - my new additions to my 2018 summer essentials.  This post was not sponsored.  These are all things I have purchased myself, with the exception of the La Roche-Posy sunscreen.  All opinions are honest, true and my own.  If you have any questions about any of the products above please give me a holler at xxx
